Fires kill and injure thousands every year and their cost is very high, not only in material but also in psychological terms. Here are some steps you can take to greatly reduce the chance of this happening to you.
1. Check your home or business thoroughly
You may need to contact an expert or a friend who has experience in electrical wiring, plumbing (gas), heating and air conditioning to examine them in detail.Place fire guards where necessary to protect yourself in case of fire.
2. Check the condition of the electrical system of the house.Check if old wiring covered by insulating materials has been eaten by insects or rodents.
Look for overloaded switches, panel boxes, or fuse boxes.
3.Check the LPG/gas system
Look for flammable components, leaking valves, faulty lights or stored flammable materials in areas near these devices.
Check the vent connectors on water heaters, ovens and clothes dryers.Call a professional to inspect the plumbing (ducts), valves and gas and oil regulators.
4. Check the air conditioning and heating unit
Heating systems require periodic maintenance. Clean the internal filters and replace at regular intervals when needed.Maintain the burners at the start of the heating season as debris can build up during the summer when the system is off.
5. Be very careful with the radiators
Use space heating devices only on stable surfaces. They should never be placed on tables, chairs, etc.Avoid connecting air conditioners to ballasts where there is a risk of overheating.
Keep combustible materials (curtains, sofa) at a safe distance (about 1 metre) from the radiators.
6. Electrical appliances must be in good condition
Keep the stove and oven clean, especially where there is a heavy build-up of grease.Check the stove, clean the filter regularly.Check the power cables of your appliances. Look for cables with damaged insulation and repair or ;replace them where there is a real need.
7. DO NOT store flammable liquids near ignition sources
Keep gasoline, paint thinners and other highly flammable liquids or materials out of the house.Do not store flammable liquids in the garage. To be safe, keep these materials outdoors or in a separate shed.
8. Be very careful with candles
The candle flame should always be covered so that there is no risk of something falling on it and for the safety of children and pets.Do not sleep and do not leave the house without having extinguished the candles! On festive days we tend to use wires to decorate the rooms. Use high quality wire to avoid the possibility of causing a fire.
9.Don't smoke lying downFeeling tired? Put out the cigarette and go to bed. Don't smoke in the bedroom as you may fall asleep and the cigarette may fall out of your hands! When you want to throw away the butts, first pour some water in the ashtray and then put them in the bin.
10. Don't walk away from the kitchen when cooking
If you plan to go out even for a short time, for example to do some gardening or check your mailbox, turn off the stove or oven. You might get forgotten or something might happen (lock yourself outside) and overheat!
Don't cook when you have consumed too much alcohol or feel too tired
